In this personal short essay, the author chronicles her trip to Riga, capital of Latvia, a journey she undertakes in an effort to track the mysterious past of her much-maligned father. She discovers that Riga, the Baltic States’ largest city rocks on with clubs, casinos and ever-present erotica. Also cultural fests with the National Opera, Ballet and Symphony. She also visits a synagogue, and learns much about her father's ultra-religious roots and life in cold, snowy Riga. ."Oh Daddy I miss you. I only wish I could have told you how much when we were together. Why did you have to leave Africa when I was 10? Why did you go to America?"

A Jew from Riga eBook Greta Beigel

A brief story, written well enough, but with very little about the background in Riga. I had hoped to have more of that information, more impressions about that, due to the title. Light on content overall.

A Jew from Riga eBook Greta Beigel Reviews

Really enjoyed this memoir by Ms. Beigel. My only complaint would be that it was too short! I hope she will expand this fascinating account of her family.
A good read.
"This is a touching tale about one daughter's quest to know more about a father who abandoned the family in Africa when she was a child. It's also a travelogue of sorts, offering some historical perspective about Riga, the capital of Latvia, and the birthplace of her Dad."
A moving tribute to a father who left the family ..a little girl who felt abandoned had to find out about this man who ultimately served her well ..a good read ...one wants more of the story
Another slice of life from the author of Mewsings My Life as a Jewish Cat. This time the author takes us with her as she visits Riga on a quest to learn more about the father who disappeared from her life when she was a child. Her story takes us to South Africa, the United States and Latvia. Beautifully written.
Father's Day is coming up...this is a sweet father daughter tale and is a great read. I hope you enjoy as much as I did!
More like an outline than a story...too many holes and gaps.
Greta Beigel, author of "A Jew from Riga", tells the story of her search for her father who left the family when Greta was 10 years old. Her father, Richard, had grown up in Riga, the capital of Latvia, but had later gone to South Africa where he married Greta's mother, Mary. Richard let his wife know that he was leaving the country after the fact when he had boarded a ship headed for America. In the meantime, Greta was a child prodigy at the piano and her mother expected her to continue on to be a musician.

When Greta was older and in England, a friend suggested that they go to Riga to see her father's country of birth. She went, but found nothing significant about her father. It was only when she won a piano competition and went to America that Greta finally discovered what she always yearned for.

This is a very heartwarming story of a woman who was brought up in an Orthodox Jewish home and when her parents divorced her mother suffered the stigma of a divorced woman in South Africa of the 1950s and 1960s. Her Jewish peers were no longer that friendly towards her. Greta remained positive through her traveling and searching for her father, and this short memoir is very well-written, quite enjoyable and uplifting to read.
A brief story, written well enough, but with very little about the background in Riga. I had hoped to have more of that information, more impressions about that, due to the title. Light on content overall.
