Eritrea Remembered eBook Marian Haley Beil
I was in the first Peace Corps group in Ethiopia, 1962-64. At that time, Eritrea was part of Ethiopia, and the Eritrean war of independence started about a month after we arrived in September 1962 when Ethiopia abrogated the 1952 agreement that ended the British protectorate. This book is primarily of interest to people who are familiar with Eritrea, especially those who knew it in those halcyon days in the early 1960's. Former Peace Corps volunteers will find it especially interesting, but it will be a good read for American service people who served at Kagnew Station in Asmara, or missionaries who taught or provided other services in Eritrea in the 60's and 70's.If Eritrea can establish the rule of law, it will again be a wonderful place to visit or to live. The climate in the highlands is as invigorating as any on earth, and the people are intelligent and hospitable.

Eritrea Remembered eBook Marian Haley Beil Reviews
A wonderful contribution to the history of the Peace Corps Experience by the talented and resourceful Marian Haley Beil. Thank you.
I'm one of the contributors. I served one year (1972-73) in Illubabor province in the southwest corner of Ethiopia, and then a second year (1973-74) in Asmara, Eritrea, which was then still part of Ethiopia. The collection of stories in this compilation really does a fantastic job of giving the reader a good overview of what was going on then in the country, and gives a hint of what Peace Corps service was like in all its variations. My older son, John Banister, was born in Asmara in August 1973, just after we had transferred there. He and I returned to the two countries in August 1995 and spent a month touring with a group of some 80+ ex PCVs and their kids. The two countries were still on friendly terms then, but several years later got into a border war over a worthless piece of scrub land. Both leaders were at fault for being stubborn fools. Isaias Afeworke is still running Eritrea, into the ground I should say.
Very good remembrances by very good people!
